Obviously playing fast and loose with the term "match winning"
wut?

Mark Waugh was a quintessential match-winning hundred guy, often did it when it was hard for other batsmen. One of the reasons he's rated higher by most than his average suggests. Only 1 of his 20 tons was in a loss.

A lot of his tons were definitely surplus to requirements I feel,(a lot of his ashes ones were scored when 2-3 others went big too ) but kept the doubters at the bay (Pak in '99 was very timely for him personally but wasn't super necessary for the team)

His work against WI and SA was class though and your classic match winning knock

His highlights:

139* against WI in 91 - Early career ton, got Australia to a strong 1st innings total to win the match against a strong attack

137 in England in 93 - Took Australia from 80/4 to a matchwinning total

112 against WI in 93 - Partnered with Border at 115/4 to take Australia to a matchwinning total

113* against SA in 93 - Helped to save the match in the third innings after Australia were 4 down and still in deficit

126 against Wi in 95 - Critical partnership with Steve to win the series at a crucial juncture

116 against SA in 96 - Matchwinning 4th innings knock, one of the best of the decade on a spicy pitch to win the series

115* against SA in 98 - Saved the game in the 4th innings to win the series for Australia

153* against India in 98 - Crucial top-scoring knock for Australia to make a competitive total to win the match after their batting struggled all series

117 against Pakistan in 98 - Ensured Australia bat Pakistan out of the test and win the series

Yes, he also had several tons that were just part of large totals, but the above is more impact innings IMO than Azhar had in his career.

Mark Waugh easily for me. Go down his list of centuries and see how many of them were clutch innings that resulted in victory, or saving a game. And across the globe, India, Pakistan, England, WI, SA, Australia.

Azhar a bit of a soft run bat. I recall a lot of his runs coming in hopeless situations or when the game in already lost.
Many of azhar's most memorable innings were frenzied counterattacks where he mixed genius batting with complete recklessness. Hard not to wonder whether some of these innings were influenced by.... other factors.

That would make him a bad fixer. Surely the ones where he got out without really contributing are the ones to look at?

Whatever it takes!!!

Pretty sure there was a game when India chased 300 against SL in the late 90s when we were like **** all for 4 and gonna lose. Azhar and Jadeja kept hitting the ball, but somehow it kept falling between fielders or they were dropped etc and we ended up winning the match.

During the Tehelka tapes, that game was specifically called out as a game they fixed and failed to execute.

And they say international cricket is hard. These guys couldn't even lose trying their best to throw it

i think their team mates had something to do with this aye

Looks like they still managed to lose that match lol
Yeah forgot it was a close last ball finish though. Pretty sure not what the fixers had schemed up for that game...

EDIT - have a look at that scorecard though... Only 5 boundaries in a 300 chase and he has made 111 in 117... Staying not out and seeing the chase through and ensuring he got the result he wanted. Mark Waugh wishes he had like a fraction of these great skills.
