I think we will never see another test match saving innings in our life time the way rest cricket is going now, that was a pure greatness innings from Atherton and the media should never underrate it.

Hearing, several years later, before I anything about cricket, of Atherton’s achievement in this SA match was one of the reasons I started to take an interest. Admittedly, I was impressed by his scholarly background - Manchester Grammar School and Cambridge University. But Atherton was definitely a factor in my becoming a cricket fan.
I listened in the car to the epic Atherton/Donald battle. Spine-tingling.

I was at that ground for every ball of the second to fifth days.

I remember on the morning of the 5th day thinking we'll take six wickets easily and Athers and Russell somehow resisting for so long.

Great resistance from Athers and Russell.

England teams have a habit of collapsing. Not this day.

The 185 and 98 were amazing knocks. He had a high ceiling did Atherton but rarely reached it

Bishop is an ICC whore who is never off our screens, he's like the acceptable version of Danny Morrison. Athers is selective, quality over quantity, says things when it's needed and always insightful. The modern day Richie...
I didn't like him originally but he has improved. My gripe with him is that his rhetorical style is to avoid stating his explicit opinion on an issue, preferring to talk around it or deferring to the others on the mic, especially if he is in the box with a more outspoken personality like Holding.
