Was he the bloked who got sconed by a Steyn bouncer and got a lump the size of an egg right on top of his head?

Yea batsmen don't see to learn do they? You'd think after all these years they'd stop coming out to face fast bowlers without head protection. Everyone thinks they're Viv Richards. You even see modern batsmen do it sometimes against the medium pacers and it's still kinda dumb to do.

I wonder if institutionalised stupidity is a thing

No, that was Craig Cumming. And he was wearing a helmet, it crushed the grill into his cheek.

Papps got sconed by Brett Lee twice in an ODI though.

That was Brett Lee at Eden Park, circa about 2005 or so? Geezus christ. I was in the terraces that day and the pace Lee was bowling, you were ****ting yourself even right out of the line of fire. Might've been the day Lee beamed McCullum as well? Hostile as hell.

Anyway, Papps was OK. Probably could've played more Test cricket, scored some decent ODI runs v SA when we were going OK and performed well at first class level.

Eighth oldest first class triple-centurion, and the oldest since WWII.

Should definitely have played more for NZ ... 6 ODIs and an average of 51.75, very unlucky.

Remember when Binga took off Paroares helmet off with a bouncer and it fell onto the stumps. Brutal pace

Steyn didn't scone him, but he did make Papps look absolutely club-standard in that 2007 series. Highest score of 9 from 4 innings. Tbf, he made Ross Taylor look club-standard too, he really was at the peak of his powers in that series.

Cumming actually got a pretty decent 48 before Steyn got him. Scored 74 on debut vs Australia too.

Cumming and Papps both got better in first class cricket but never got enough chances at international level - probably due to being hit by raw pace.

It’s a shame, they probably met the two fastest bowlers in their prime ... wouldn’t have been an issue in 90% of internationals.

I remember Cumming saying on the cricket show a while ago that Lee was almost hitting 160ks in one spell he faced. Think it might be on youtube, actually.

Not Terrible
Power Papps is a total gun.

Ended up having a great FC career after moving to Wellington. Should've come in to the Test side for Guptill for one last hurrah at one point.

That Papps triple ton was quite something, some of the boundaries were a sight to behold. All in all a solid stalwart of the kiwi FC scene, seemed to get better with age

I always felt Papps was unfairly smeared for his occasional shortcomings against short bowling.

Sorry.
