International Captain
Two ATVG Aussies
Is that impressive in and of itself? Is Root more impressive because he’s England’s first ATG middle order bat in 55 years?Hayden here. He makes my first Aussie ATG Xi. Remarkable effort for anyone to make the 1st Xi really given near 150 Years of cricket talent of far and away the greatest cricketing nation of all time.
Won’t argue, that’s something needed to consider. Is that impressive in and of itself? Is Root more impressive because he’s England’s first ATG middle order bat in 55 years?
Definitely closer than the result suggests, but they probably mostly think Hayden by a small margin. Which I'd agree with.Thought it would be closer
That’s a good pointThe problem with picking against Hayden, is that you can't name a definitively better modern opener than him other than Gavaskar. Yes, you can cherry pick the record, but any analysis which doesn't simply lie by omission won't allow it.
With Clarke, you could find 20 better modern middle order bats.

Kohli and down, there are some arguments to be made, but the rest are pretty ironclad.Modern openers definitely better than Hayden: Gavaskar

There might be a few more that I’m missing
That’s true. I can see reasons for picking Clarke over YK, Chanders, Root, and Inzi.Kohli and down, there are some arguments to be made, but the rest are pretty ironclad.
