George Hirst was a giant of first class cricket, one of the greatest county cricketers ever. Lord Hawke described him as the greatest county cricketer of all time. In 1906, he became the only cricketer to score 2,000 runs and take 200 wickets in an English cricket season. Also in 1906, he scored two centuries and took eleven wickets in the match against Somerset at Bath. He scored 1,000 runs and took 100 wickets in 14 seasons - a figure surpassed only by Wilfred Rhodes. He made 60 first class centuries and took 10 wickets in a match 40 times.
Yet his Test record is pretty underwhelming. A bowling average of 30 in his time is more like 40 today. The early 20th century all rounder equivalent of Graeme Hick or Mark Ramprakash.

Yep. He reached the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in June, beating everyone else in history by a comfortable margin. In the match against Somerset at Bath, he scored 111 and 117*, and picked up 6 for 70 and 5 for 45. He remains the only cricketer with two hundreds and two five-fors in the same first-class match.
