It's kinda surprising there isn't another Ames vs Knott thread here; given how many goddamn Kallis vs Sanga threads exists.....

Not really comparable bats, except based on Test stats against the best side of their time. Ames has over 100 first class centuries and a Test average over 40. Knott was never a top class batsman at any level of professional cricket. But Knott's ATG keeping takes this, IMO.

Really good comp.

From all I've read, would have to go with Knott as being the better keeper and comparable bat.
Knott was a better keeper by miles, but they weren't really comparable bats. Yes, Ames had downhill skied his fair bit; but he also has 100 FC centuries and I believe for a 2-3 year peak averaged 60+ in FC. It's close due to Knott being one of the finest glovesman, but Ames himself was a very fine keeper; probably capable of playing for England even if he batted like Tallon or Grout.
