The other comparison thread was a washout in favor of Kohli. This one may be more interesting.

If Kohli were to retire today, who would be considered the better bat?

He definitely should be. The top 3 Indian batsmen are Tendulkar-Gavaskar-Dravid. Kohli is going to have to turn his form around big time to have any chance breaking into that.
I really want him to get a second wind and overtake Dravid. When he got his first ton in Australia, you got a sense this guy will continue after Tendulkar as the next bonafide Indian ATG bat.

I hate seeing great cricketers not live to their potential.

Sure. Let's see if this is closer. I imagine he would be behind Dravid though?
he is but only he a slight margin imo. can easily overtake him with a strong overseas tour that results in India winning, his reputation takes a hit as his best performances came in series losses while India’s two best overseas series wins recently have been without Kohli being the main figure in them

That is a somewhat fair point. But then Tendulkar in the nineties had the same problem and that didn't stop ppl from rating him highly.

Kohli never had the reputation of Tendulkar. Tendulkar was good enough for atleast 1 Test century every series imo. Tendulkar never had England 2014 or Aus 2017 type series in his resume .

Ok but I don't think scoring in failing series somehow sets Dravid and Kohli apart, especially when Dravid's greatest series was a failed one, England 2011.

I rate Kohli 2018>Dravid 2011, since he massively out scored everyone playing. Also faced a tougher attack as Anderson was at his peak in 2018, and overall tougher attack and tougher pitches

Kohli's done enough abroad to be an Indian great. It's reached a point now where you have to consider pre and post-slump Kohli as two different batsmen.

Kohli dominated in England and SA like sehwag never did in a much harder era vs seam. Sehwag is definitely better vs spin and is an opener, so can understand why someone would rate him above Kohli for that + his SR.

Sehwag doesn't get that much of the opener tax for me because he sucked in all the places where facing the new ball was much tougher. Not to say it's not tough in India but not as much as eng/nz/sa imo.

I’m not sure if Kohli faced a tougher attack and tougher pitches tbh. Dravid massively out scored his teammates as well.

KP scored more than Dravid overall. Next highest run scorer after Kohli was more than 200 runs behind. Plus Anderson/Broad were in peak form in 2018. Anderson hadn’t hit his peak by 2011. Plus Curran also bowled well that series. As for the pitches, I have generally read a lot of the other posters describing the pitches in 2018 SA and Emg tours are demonic

Broad in that 2011 series was 10x the bowler he was in 2018. Anderson was already into his prime, Bresnan and Swann also high quality. 2011 attack was much stronger imo. Pitches in 2018 tougher though for sure.
