I'm wondering if Barrington was actually even rated that low, found someone who called him the best batting prospect from England since Denis Compton
The first (likely 2nd, first was in a book about Don, where his average was listed among the highest after Don) I remember hearing of Barrington was when I was 11/12; in a Bengali Short Novella from the 60s, which had some children playing cricket in the rooftop and one of them commentating (is the rowdiest character I have encountered in any story), calling the bowler Sobers and batsman Barrington. Always found it a little strange..... Especially given how little he was talked about.

I remember one of the Indian spinners claiming that Barrington was the hardest Batsman to get out so maybe that played an element?

Chandrashekhar, but that claimed was made recently. The author wasn't a sports writer, but merely an average follower of the game I suppose, and given I have read almost all his works, cricket hardly comes there often.

Barrington didn’t get a single vote.
Kapil Dev & Richie Benaud got 5 votes.
Even Lance Gibbs got one vote.

Alec Bedser was higher rated than Fred Trueman, one of the other weird placements of the era.

By that logic Lara could be rated above Tendulkar

When this list was done in 1999, Lara was probably ahead and it’s hardly black and white between the two. Consensus is Sachin is better but there re valid dissenting arguments

In 1999, Sachin was clearly ahead of Lara.
ODIs were considered important as well & Sachin had arguably the best ever one day year in 1998.
