Joe Root - Wisden's Leading Cricketer in the World

The Sean

Cricketer Of The Year
So, the recently-departed England captain has been given the highest individual accolade in this year's Wisden - and after a superb 2021, he was always a strong contender for it. His award does, however, put us in a couple of strange situations:

- An English player has now won this award for the past three years, despite their travails particularly at Test level
- The only one of the Fab Four that Wisden has now never considered to be the best cricketer in the world is Steve Smith

Wisden is an English organisation, always going to have a leaning towards things involving English cricket

they usually choose 1 or 2 random county trundlers in their "5 cricketers of the year"

Warne was also one of the 5 cricketers of the century, almost certainly influenced by his effect on English cricket

Yeah, they have an English bias and will give it to any brit who had a great ashes and has an inch of a claim.

Tbf, I think it's at least an all-format award and in the period 2016-2018, Kohli averaged the same as Smith in tests (66) and was historically great in LO formats so that probably led to Smith missing out and Kohli winning thrice in a row.

Steve Smith is the only cricketer to win the ICC test cricketer of the year award twice since it's creation in 2004 so that's something. I find this award a lot farier. Root did win for 2021 but they scrapped the award due to COVID for 2020 and Cummins won in 2019.

Steve Smith was a strong candidate in 2019 but edged out by Ben Stokes spectacular, if slightly fortunate, World Cup and Headingley Test winning innings.

EDIT
The Award would have been the 2020 award for 2019 exploits. Uncle Ben won both years anyway.

its most certainly my favourite time of the year on cricket twitter. with hoards of irate fans questioning why their favourite cricketer wasn't nominated.

damn kallis winning in 2005 over warne and flintoff is pretty tough going. looking at it he had a great year but half of his tests were versus zimbabwe and the west indies ffs.

It looks as though the award year is for the previous cricketing year, so Kallis won for his 2004. Similarly MoYo must have won for 2006 as he did very little in 2007.

At some point more recently it appears to have changed to reflect the calendar year it was given for.
