ABD. The more we discuss him, the higher I am inclined to rank him.

The only reason we can't rank him an ATG is that he batted so deep, his career coincided with the flat era and should have played a couple of years more. But in terms of skill, I would put him in the Lara/Tendulkar level.
I think he is ATG but I do have a wider category for that than you do. I think we probably rate him in a similar spot.

He did play in a pretty flat era but the one consistent exception to that was South Africa where he played half his games. Counting against that is that he batted in the easiest position to make runs in SA behind a really good top four.

I do think he underachieved a bit, but unlike most batsmen in his era and the one following it he was absolutely elite in all three formats. We shouldn't consider other formats when rating him as a Test player but we should perhaps give him more slack for not being the standout Test bat he could have been given the demands of being a three format player.
