Botham's first bowling and third batting ranking did not occur at the same time. He was top of the bowling for 845 days, including two whole years continuously. Absence of Packer players was a factor. During this time his highest batting ranking was 7th after the Jubilee Test in India.

Miller was top bowler for 35 days, during which his batting ranking was 13th.

Sobers was first and fifth at the same time in 1963. When Kallis was number one batsman, his highest bowling ranking was 16th.
Yeah I figured, but still.

Botham’s centuries
1. NZ : Hadlee
2. Pak : Nawaz
3. Pak : Qasim
4. Ind : Kapil, Bedi
5. Aus : Lillee
6. Ind : Kapil
7. Aus : Lillee, Alderman
8. Aus : Lillee, Alderman
9. Ind : Kapil
10. Ind : Kapil
11. Ind : Kapil
12. NZ : Hadlee
13. NZ : Hadlee
14. Aus : Hughes, Reid

Yes he did not have a century against WestIndies but he has 6 of them against Hadlee & Lillee.

No cricketer in Test history has ever scored 10 centuries and taken 10 five-wicket hauls.

Except Ian Botham.
51 Tests. 11 centuries. 19 five-wicket hauls.
What most could not achieve over a lifetime, Botham managed to do it in just 51 Tests.
It's just stupid how good he was at first.

he also apparently said during the 1986 Botham ban crisis that Botham should be locked away and the key should be thrown away, and that he is an idiot who shouldn't even play first class Cricket again. Jesus Christ.

I really need to know what Botham did to irk Compton so much!
During the 1980s Botham became the biggest name in English cricket since Grace. Almost bigger than the game. Some of the old players didn't like it, and also genuinely believed his figures had flattered him. In some ways Compton and Botham had much in common. Neither took things too seriously, both were generous souls who enjoyed the night life, and each played professional football. Neither were selfish cricketers. But Compton strongly disapproved of what he considered brash and loutish behaviour, and had shown a similar lack of sympathy towards the young Trueman.

Much the same had happened to Greig a few years before. More than once on commentary Jim Laker described his bowling as "rubbish". On another occasion Greig was batting with Cowdrey and went down the pitch to talk to him, prompting Laker to sigh: "I really hope he isn't trying to tell Colin how to bat".

This feud is too funny, mfs never even met but just hating for hating's sake.
I’m curious if Botham ever does take cheap shots at current cricketers, just so we could shove this back in his face.

Also TIL Compton, kind of a ****. Not in the good way sadly.

Jeez that’s some pathetic **** from Laker.

Gavaskar just trying to emulate his predecessors clearly.

eh He's fine, lots of older Cricketers bully Botham though, Compton is just the one who is the most comical with his blunt disapproval, Larwood and Trueman openly mocked Botham too. Bedser also insulted him and more or less forced him to resign, Kinda feel bad for him.

They probably just hate him cos they ain’t him tbh. None of them had his talent, and none of them ever became Lords.

Plus none of them apparently got to smoke weed either.

Possible.

I also think it might have to do with how both Trueman and Larwood feuded with the establishment and Botham very much was the golden boy of it until the weed drama, seeing someone they considered inferior in bowling to them (which he was to Fred atleast) being so celebrated while they were treated as disposable must've stung.

After reading Viv Richards’ autobiography, I see Botham differently. Viv praised him for two incidents.

In 1986, Somerset felt that Viv was getting old and decided to replace him with Crowe. Botham felt that this was disrespectful to Viv who had played an important role in making them a great club and he quit in protest of how they handled his friend.

Viv talked about racism and color issues. He felt black players such as himself were not okay with touring South Africa. He said he could understand why white players toured there since cricket was not a rich sport and those tours offered good money. He talked about how Botham refused to go there saying “If I went there, how could I face my buddy Viv” and Viv said his respect for Botham went up 10x after his refusal to tour SA.
