Is there a future for test cricket?

Just need to not over complicated it..
12 test teams, one league
8 series each (4 home 4 away)
Series any length.. if you want to play a single test so be it or 5 tests whatever.
10 points for series win
5 for draw
0 for loss
Top 4 play off semi final then final
Higher league ranking decides team progression in finals.
Best teams will still find their way to the top.

Can we have a truly comprehensive discussion about the future of test cricket that presumes that the current test nations are the only test nation that will ever be?

Ready for the discussion and would love it if a new nation can come up so far up the ranks like Afghanistan. But it is difficult to foresee something like that.

On top of it, we see current cricket boards like SA, WI, Pak, Zim, Ire, Afg and BD struggling to hold tests/longer series with SL in risk of joining this list. Zim, Ire and Afg are yet to get to the level of other nations as well and are almost second tier.

So, more new additions is a long way away.

The obstacle to having new Test playing countries is that the Intercontinental Cup is no longer a thing, so nation vs nation FC cricket no longer exists.

We need that revived if we're ever going to develop a new Test playing nation. If the Associates are not playing FC cricket then there is no reason for them to try and set up a domestic multi-day league, so even if they are fully professional and killing it in white ball cricket they'll not actually be prepared to play Tests even if given the chance.

first class tours?

could even bring in a little bit of money to both boards if jigged right. if the netherlands or whoever were playing down the road at seddon park against northern districts id go cheer on the dutch.

that's a question I have as well - if the KNCB and Cricket Ireland can find a financially viable way to play some 4-day cricket against each other, will the ICC block that game from having FC status? Or are associate cricket boards free to organise FC games between themselves, the same way they can have their own T20I or ODI/List A bilateral series.

The Intercontinental Cup has been shelved partly because the ICC (read: the full member boards) decided to reduce how much they would subsidize the tournament, and all the Associates taking part found it too costly for them to play without that subsidy.

no idea, but if the icc really wanted to grow the game i see no reason why nz or india or both couldn't stick around after the world test final for a test against ireland. we've got a 20 man squad, may as well use it.

sure it might be tricky to back up after the emotional energy of a world final but i think the depth players in either squad would enjoy the opportunity.

england have like unlimited money they should play ireland in a test annually.

Interesting to see that the IPL is expanding to 10 teams and expanding the number of matches played. If they push the schedule back into March that’ll have serious implications for test cricket in NZ and SA.

Well that's the whole issue isnt it? They don't want to spend the money.

Don't think the ICC would get involved here any more. I think they even gave some irish domestix FC status. The trouble is when the boards themselves call their teams things like "Ireland Wolves" so it doesn't count in the stats.

An NL full tour of NZ playing domestic sides would be kinda cool. Although they'd have to draw lots which sides yer van Beeks and ter Braaks and so forth would play for

This. I get that COVID still might be making this less practical than it would usually be, but in general I want to see any team that tours England play a test agaisnt Ireland too.

Need to have a proper world test championship. Can't have a championship were teams don't play equal games. Ridiculous where you have one side playing 21 games and another only 7.

If anything it's the slow death of one day cricket. Outside of Kohli, can't see anyone playing 300 matches again.

Crazy to think Smith and Warner have only played 128 each. Ponting would've been around 300 this part of his career.

I really think the WTC will help. It gives context to a lot of the tests beyond any existing rivalries, there's something to play for, and seems like numbers wise at least, it's been a commercial success:
