Ponting wasn't an outrageously bad captain, but he was pretty standard. I wouldn't back him to make the most out of a limited team like you would for a Fleming or Jayawaradene. Did a great job of managing the personalities in the team though - could you imagine how Warne might have turned out under any other skipper? In reality that's all that was needed of him. So he played his role perfectly.
I've always felt Mushy is a fairly terrible captain. Kinda just has the job due to seniority and being a lock in the team for so long. Does make fairly poor tactical and strategical decisions. MSD as a Test captain also declined towards the end of his career, but that was tied to India's bowling attack going through that terrible slump and the Fab 4 fading in the middle order. Couldn't really do much, but was still depressing to see how negative he got.
