Reading up on this, Miandad apparently did have a single chance in his innings, on 66 surviving a “very tough” c&b chance against Hadlee. Hadlee went out of the attack on the second morning before lunch, Miandad was 154 at the close of play Day 1
Then Johan's post was pointless. Who cares if Hadlee went off injured if Miandad was on a million not out already.

How can you go 12 years never being lbw at home lol. How many games was that.
50 innings across 9 years at home. Only 8 LBWs in his whole career at home in 86 innings, compared to 25 LBWs away from home in 103 innings.

It's definitely sus, especially when you consider Miandad's technique involved a lot of shuffling across and defending with his pads in front of the stumps. Makes no sense why his LBW rate at home was lower by such a huge amount because you'd think bowlers would target the stumps/pads way more on Asian pitches too.

The 25 away from home could be suspect too as the umpires could be bias against him as the best visiting batsman.
I guess my question is has anyone since the change of home umpires come close to 50 knocks without being lb.

Miandad was a very good batsman. had their been neutral umpires or DRS then his batting average would not be as high, this is why it is so difficult to rate players against each other from different eras.

I guess it's suspect for a lot of players though. I've seen videos of the raucous crowds in the carribean in the 80s or early 90s. I wouldn't fancy triggering viv or lara back then, especially if playing in Antigua or Trinidad.

Miandad's record in this respect seems anecdotally special, but I don't think many other players of the home umpires Era would be much different. I think I read of Gavaskar as well as having some similar sort of disparity.

I think it was just probably shitty umpiring all around in those days, and I don't really accept that Miandad would be the only unique case of it out of 100+ years of that system.

I stand corrected on Gavaskar then.

I leave it as an exercise for the reader to find other batsmen with high home/away lbw disparities.
This made me curious about lbw’s in general.

A standout for modern players is Sanga, similarly to Gavaskar, just 19 lbw’s in his career. (4 at home, 12 away, 3 neutral). Most other modern greats have a much higher percentage of lbws.

Looking at the 00’s+ guys and lbws as a percentage

Sanga 19/216 8.80%
de Villiers 23/173 13.29%
Dravid 34/254 13.39%
Williamson 26/171 15.20%
Lara 37/226 16.37%
Kallis 40/240 16.67%
Ponting 47/258 18.22%
Smith 35/187 18.72%
Root 51/264 19.32%
Kohli 41/197 20.81%
Tendulkar 63/296 21.28%

and here I thought Smith was meant to be extra suspect to LBW due to the analysis of the Cricketing messiah @centurymaker
