See firstly, ODI WCs are more important than bilaterals, agreed, but you can’t ignore bilaterals completely. Secondly in a WC, openers will score more runs and end up topping the charts more than a number 3. In the 2019 WC, Kohli could have easily ended up with 550 odd runs or more, but every time he came out to bat, Sharma and Rahul had already batted for 20-25 overs. And also SRT has fluffed up two finals, and has one innings of note in knockouts overall, so it’s not like he’s played innings of far more importance on a regular basis. Plus prolly Kohli will play 2027 WC, so he could well there too.
Kohli still performs well at world cups his like in the top 10 runs for world cups averaging nearly 50. Then you add in the t20 world cups where his been close to the highest run scorer in like 3-4 of those tournaments.

Him not being a big scorer at world cups is an absolute myth his put the team on his back for some these tournaments it’s not all up to him to win it all

If he dominates this WC and is the MOTS, he will be the 3rd best ODI player after Viv and Sachin, IMO.

Sachin has been the highest scorer in 1996 and 2003. He was also the second highest scorer and the highest for India in the successful 2011 campaign. Great performances and aggregates overall in WC KO games despite 2 bad finals.

Kohli so far has done SFA when compared to that. It is hard to catch up in just one World Cup. Great knock yesterday though, best of his odi career.
If you’re on just that logic you might as well write off half the players who have good odi records then. And what about Ponting in your list? His arguably the biggest game player in icc tournaments. Yesterday’s innings isn’t even close to his best odi innings. Like I said in my previous post saying he doesn’t score big runs in world cups ain’t true at all, his in the top 10 run scorers in world cups and and for t20 world cups his been close to Indias top run scorer in like 3-4 of those tournaments

He scores runs at world cups but so far he hasn't stood out. You say he averages 50 but the argument the other way is that he hasn't even been one of the top 10 runscorers at a single world cup try. Do you realise how disappointing that is? 10 batsmen with better output than him in all three editions he's played so far is very underwhelming. And he's carried India in the t20wcs, not the odi WCs. He's not even been India's top scorer at an odi world cup once.

He needs to dominate this world cup as one of the 2-3 best batsmen and play atleast one significant knockout innings (even if we lose) to deserve being rated as a top tier ATG in the format.

The knockouts part, agreeable. But Kohli could have easily been amongst the top 5 scorers of the last WC, if Ind's openers weren't playing out 20-25 overs each game. But I agree, to be considered in the top 3 (along with Viv and Sachin), he needs an impactful knockout innings.
