How much longer would Khawaja have to play?

How much longer would Khawaja need to play at this or a similarly high quality level for him to be considered amongst other quality openers?

Pretty vague question

If you mean Hobbs, Hutton, Gavaskar then it's not going to happen

If you mean the next tier down he's probably just about there
Yeah obviously not that top tier level. (unless he managed to play til Hobbs did)

This, given the fact there aren't many good openers around at present he perhaps looks better than he is but he is definitely below Hayden.
I mean tbf he’s averaging 57 in what everyone’s been saying has been a more bowler friendly era.

I thought he was pretty good in England last year.
Yeah he chipped in regularly with runs, but thought he failed to capitalise on all the starts he got. Reached 3 figures only once.

He has just that one 100+ score in 24 innings in England and 0 from 10 in SA

Another couple of years at this level and I'd consider him as a potential opener for Australia's AT XI.

Though that probably says more about how few top-tier openers we've produced.

Khawaja also opens rather than gets the softer run at #5.

His top/middle order career definitely gives off strong 'Tom Latham meets Sri Lanka at The Basin' vibes but his late career work as an opener is excellent, especially in the context of his era.

I'm not bothered where to rank him per se but he is definitely one of the most valuable players Australia have uncovered since Langer and Hayden retired. Warner had many opening partners during his career.

Still **** all in the scheme of things.

I'm pleased he's had a career renaissance - he took a lot of unfair flack earlier in his career and as someone the wrong side of 40, seeing sportspeople getting better with age gives me hope in life. However, he's going to have to play a lot more matches as opener, keep up his performance level, and do quite a bit more outside Australia and tours v Pakistan to be put into the top tier group.

Bowling friendly/batting friendly "era" talk has been annoying me lately because it's such a generalisation. More importantly Khawaja's stint has coincided with Australian pitches being more bowler friendly, often excessively so. That's what makes it impressive moreso than any talk of "eras" IMO

Look everyone TJB is annoyed at minutiae again
