How do declarations work?

I admit it, I am a new fan of cricket. We just don't get cricket on TV here stateside unless you get the dish (which I'm working on).

Here's my question. How does a declaration work, how do they determine the target number reached for a draw and for a win? Any references on this is greatly appreciated.

Hi welcome aboard.

A captain can declare in FC cricket on any score or what he feels fit and gives his bowlers enough to time to bowl out the opposition.

A captain can declare on 110 or 587. Generally some lower scores when the declare on is that they have a huge lead and they say lead by 350-450.

Hope this doesnt seem to complicated :D :) 8D :)

Although this will end up in Cricket Chat.
