The best one for Sobers is definitely 63 with the bat and 28 with the ball. Pretty much what @shortpitched713 posted though with better bowling numbers and worse batting numbers and 2 less matches than his current criteria. Incredible record though!

Yeah, funny thing is, after the end of my span, there was 2 tests in Australia where he got big wicket totals, but few runs. I could have added that to reduce both his bowling and batting average, but thought the selected one looked more impressive with it's very high batting average and still sub 30 bowling.

This one you selected is also incredibly impressive, although they're all essentially the same run.

But for the second part, it's incomprehensible that anyone who's ever watched a game of cricket would say that.

It's not big enough on it's own to swing an individual comparison unless context of team fielding depth needs to be addressed, but 1 fielder very rarely can turn a match with that skillset alone.

None of this is based is the needs of a specific team, so I don't get the first part.

And with regards to a fielder changing a match. You don't believe that Kallis, M. Waugh, Ponting changed the courses of matches with special catches? Complemented and aided McGrath, Steyn and countless bowlers before then? Just go to YouTube and look at the catches he took off of Gibbs, Hall and co.

We have a comparison vs possibly and arguably the 2nd greatest batsman of all time, a capable and versatile part time bowler vs a top 10 bowler and top 6 or so pacer and good lower batsman where you believe that it's very close, but fielding is insufficient or incapable of tilting the result one way or the other. Even taking into account that one was an elite slip fielder and close infielder to spin. Ok. And in top of that, doesn't think fielding can impact a game.

Sobers as the greatest fielder of just his own era seems pretty bold. I've heard this claimed of Colin Bland a lot. Not sure I've ever heard Sobers compared favourably to Bland.

1) The thread is only comparing the 2 listed peaks, so your top X All time whatever isn't relevant here (this is almost certainly top 1 bowling peak from Imran on the numbers). Of course, it could swing in favor of Sobers through the course of entire career (depending on personal criteria), as he had much greater longevity with his primary skill of batting, than Imran with his bowling, who broke down due to injury.

2) Way to strawman my opinion on fielding. I never said I don't think great fielding can impact a game. What I said is fielding is more down to great fielding units as a team, because barring luck, a fielder can't force the ball to be hit to him. Of course fielding is a useful asset for any player.
