Thorpe has a better record in dicey conditions and was also the more technically skilled batter so I don't think the results are a function of Cook's trickier batting position. So for me, Thorpe.

Thorpe for me was the better player of world class bowling. Cook was relentless when we’ll set as his huge innings in UAE, Brisbane and Melbourne testify.

thorpe probably underrated because he scored slowly. Doesn’t have a lot of tons either
Lack of big hundreds is what hurts him. That is one of the main reasons why I objectively rate Gooch/Gower over Thorpe, but it also leads him to being forgotten to a harsh extent. He was a prized wicket in a low-scoring game all around the world.

Thorpe for me. Cook has very big technical flaws against fast bowling and would get rinced and destroyed in any era difficult for batting, I reckon you can say the same for Hayden and Sehwag.
