Gooch>Chanderpaul is nowhere near as ridiculous as Kohli>Root, to reach the ridiculousness of Kohli>Root, I think you'd have to say Atherton>Chanderpaul. (get baited Luffy).
It's not even ridiculous, the opposite pretty much is.

I've always found it interesting that people will deride Chanderpaul for being a selfish cricketer while also giving him zero credit for being good enough to stick around and score more runs. If he played for a better team, then he'd have been given even more opportunity to actually do so.

It's a hard comparison to argue here as they functionally are very different so don't particularly lean either way
I also really dislike this Lords innings being brought up. It was actually the second innings (Chanderpaul scored 128* and 97*). Giles was in fine form and Shiv was actually hit multiple times by the fast bowlers. Once Lara got out (4/172 chasing 478) the rest of them began to collapse pretty quickly. Shiv was actually very aggressive, scoring 70 of the last 95 runs off 95 balls. I saw no complaints about him being selfish then - in only one over since Lara was dismissed did he take a single before the last ball of the over. Sometimes the opposition does make it hard to rotate the strike. I’m really not going to hold that innings against him at all.

Pretty sure the inning was Riverside ground.

though if he had such an incapability playing with tailenders, just come up few spots to bat rather than hide behind others when he was desperately needed up the order

Wut?

I rate Chanderpaul well below Hayden/Sehwag/Cook/Inzamam; and rate Gooch ahead of Cook, and don't think that's controversial.

Gooch was a very good batsman, scored great runs against the Quartet. Chanderpaul was an extremely selfish batter who just went out to bat to boost his average. And as @Johan pointed out, in the 130* knock in Lords, he made #11 Pedro Collins play 50+ deliveries.

Their RPI is very comparable, and when we account for the opponent, pitches and everything, I have absolutely no reason to go for Chanderpaul here.
I think Chanderpaul would've scored runs against Terry Alderman.

I think Gooch was the best in the early 90s. Crowe the best in the late 80s.
agreed, Viv the best until like 85-86, Crowe eclipising him post Viv's Pakistan series, Gooch taking over in 1990 and losing it to Lara or Tendulkar in 1994.
