Averages are misleading here, considering one opened in England and was a team man and one played at 5 and 6 in 2000s and was average obsessed.

Chanderpaul's RPI — 42.3 (without minnow bashing, 40.9)
Graham Gooch's RPI — 41.3 (without minnow bashing, 40.8)

Gooch absolutely is a better Batsmen than Chanders, compareable actual run output but he won't make the #11 face deliveries and he would produce runs in the top 4 which would set the tone of the match, Chanders averaged 34.8 when he tried batting in the top 4 for a matter of fact and most importantly, Gooch would do much better on spicier pitches than Chanders.

That's just Sayon's genuine opinion after going through both Cricketer's careers, he is allowed to view the gap in quality as substantial.

Wut?

I rate Chanderpaul well below Hayden/Sehwag/Cook/Inzamam; and rate Gooch ahead of Cook, and don't think that's controversial.

Gooch was a very good batsman, scored great runs against the Quartet. Chanderpaul was an extremely selfish batter who just went out to bat to boost his average. And as @Johan pointed out, in the 130* knock in Lords, he made #11 Pedro Collins play 50+ deliveries.

Their RPI is very comparable, and when we account for the opponent, pitches and everything, I have absolutely no reason to go for Chanderpaul here.

Not Terrible
I've always found it interesting that people will deride Chanderpaul for being a selfish cricketer while also giving him zero credit for being good enough to stick around and score more runs. If he played for a better team, then he'd have been given even more opportunity to actually do so.

It's a hard comparison to argue here as they functionally are very different so don't particularly lean either way

Well someone might also say Kohli is substantially better than Root in test cricket.. doesn't make it right

Gooch>Chanderpaul is nowhere near as ridiculous as Kohli>Root, to reach the ridiculousness of Kohli>Root, I think you'd have to say Atherton>Chanderpaul. (get baited Luffy).
