I don't think it reduces the number of links - assuming the linked players appeared in the same match. There are still two links between Nayudu and Ramprakash.
Can't we use someone else like Kumble or Tendulkar or Waugh instead of Ramprakash?
It would still require two links from Nayudu to one of them. Wadekar or Pataudi then someone else.
What about instead then, after WG Grace from 1908 we use Brian Close to go from 1949-86. If we connect Grace and Close with 2 players, + Close and current with 2 players we are done and reduce 1 player.. I think this must be doable
Grace and Close can be connected with Woolley and Compton/Hutton I think. Or Rhodes and Headley

Found one, Grace played with Hobbs, Hobbs played with TN Pearce, who played with Close
Me too, but Grace to Hobbs and Hobbs to Freddie Brown, who played in Close's first Test.
