shiv chanderpaul has 77 first class hundreds.

not sure if he has retired from first class cricket, he turns 45 later this week.

his last f/c game was for lanc v surrey at the oval in 2018. he was one player i thought may have got to 100 centuries.

Shiv was hurt by a slow start to his career. Didn't start churning out the tons frequently til he was nearly 30

Maybe that's a reason he was able to go on for so long. The earlier you start, the harder it might be to keep going well into your 30s. Whereas if you've started later you could have more motivation to go on longer.

Chanders actually did start quite young at Test level. His longevity is odd for that reason and also not having a very orthodox technique. Did batting 5/6 help in this regard? It did for Misbah, for example.

Chanderpaul developed a fairly "selfish" style of batting (can't blame him for trying to maximize his output given how poor WI were) as his career progressed, but he definitely wasn't one to cash in when the going was easy and fail against tough attacks or in tricky conditions, he almost always stood up.

Yeah, he seemed to usually do great against Australia even before 2002 and certainly had some great moments after

5 tons and 11 fifties from 20 tests is some consistent output

Remember in particular one series in England where he was so much better than everyone else that it was ridiculous.

Always liked Chanderpaul, can't blame him one bit for his approach to batting when you consider some of the hacks he was surrounded with. The way his Test career ended was especially ****e, how crushing must it be to be told you are no longer good enough for a team with Devon bloody Smith in it, that's just bat**** insane

Never understood the "selfish" label thrown at Chanders. How is making runs for your team selfish?

No, but there were certainly a few occasions where it felt as if he was happy to stay not out while not farming the strike/hitting out etc. so it's not unfair to call those a bit selfish.

Overall, obviously can't blame the only guy who was making any runs in that team for a few years after Lara's retirement.

Well, Chanders was pretty defensive by nature. Perhaps these batting traits just became more noticeable post-Lara, and misinterpreted as selfish?

I haveno problem with the best batsman in a team taking up as muchstrike as possible.

Chanderpaul would often take a single early in the over when batting with tailenders

He also didn't seem intent on trying to hit boundaries and score quickly when the situation called for it

Just seemed to bat in his own little bubble, regardless of what was going on around him. Hence the selfish tag.

He had a lot of problems with cramping and batting endurance early in his career, I don't think he was any worse player, just physically he had troubles.
