Do you need to be tactically astute as a captain?

I think the bottom line for a good captain is "how well can they keep their team onside?" Obviously tactics matter but give me a captain who's probably somewhat conservative tactic wise but will inspire the best out of his team over someone who's brilliant tactically but gets too many key players offside.

95% of successful captaincy is having decent players who have a modicum of respect for you, and not letting your personal performance drop in the process.

The "best captains" (not coincidentally) tend to have the best teams at their disposal
.
Not sure this is true tbh. Compre the captaincy reps of Ponting to Fleming, for instance
