Debuts & Retirements draft

AndrewB

International Vice-Captain
I'll continue to boost my fast-bowling with Peter Siddle, who afaik is non-retired so I go back to 1877-1889.
Think that completes Round 10.

Andrew, harsh, and Howe are all well into the 2000s so I'll take Mohammad Azharuddin for my last pick.

01. Andy Sandham (1921 - 1930)
02. Plum Warner (1909 -1912)
03. Everton Weekes (1948 - 1958)
04. Hon. Lionel Tennyson (1913 - 1921)
05. Mohammad Azharuddin (1985 - 2000)
06. Albert Trott [5] (1895 - 1909)
07. Ray Illingworth * [4] (1958 - 1973)
08. Gubby Allen [3] (1930 - 1948)
09. Tiger Smith + (1912 - 1913)
10. Charles Turner [1] (1887 - 1895)
11. Jeff Thomson [2] (1973 - 1985)

A Gold Tier batsman or two short as I was too late arriving on the scene, and should have somehow angled for Hutton (1937) in hindsight. But I'm happy with the attack and the overall balance and IQ of the team which has 5 former Captains.

Classy as hell

Should I pick Ben Stokes or Kyle Abbott? I have two pacers till now in McKenzie and Benjamin + Kallis. Batting is relatively strong, so it's not a concern as such, but it's always nice to have Stokes at 7.

Is Kyle Abbott capable of batting at No.7 ?

That's 9 rounds out of 11 where I've been first or last to pick, I think...
I'll complete the XI with Allan Steel:

Graham Gooch (1975-1995)
Jeffrey Stollmeyer (1939-1955)
Ernest Tyldesley (1921-1929)
KS Ranjitsinhji (1896-1902)
Allan Steel (1880-1888)
Warwick Armstrong (1902-1921)
Les Ames (1929-1939)
Shaun Pollock (1995-2008)
Fred Titmus (1955-1975)
George Lohmann (1886-1896)
Peter Siddle (2008-date)

Pretty solid line-up, bats very deep (they all made at least one FC hundred) and plenty of variety in the bowling.

Okays. Ben Stokes (2013-)

Odd-Even XI

Sunil Gavaskar
Herbert Sutcliffe
Dudley Nourse
Jacques Kallis (6)
Billy Gunn
Aubrey Faulkner (5)
Ben Stokes (4)
Jack Board +
Graham McKenzie (1)
Winston Benjamin (2)
Subhash Gupte (3)

Nice, deep batting. Top 4 is good and solid.

Billy Gunn has 25000 runs and 48 hundreds in FC @ 33.02 in the 1880s and 90s. Wisden says "As a batsman he represented the orthodox -one might even say the classic - school at its best. With his perfectly straight bat and beautifully finished style, he was a model to be copied." Not looked upon unfavorably in the company of Shrewsburry and Stoddart, and sometimes bettering their season record. He played many a fine innings for Notts. Most notable innings being 228 against Turner and Ferris at Lord's and 58 against Lohmann and Lockwood on a minefield at the Oval.

Board had 6 seasons of 1000+ runs as well (in county) along with his keeping chops.

Pace spearheads in McKenzie and Benjamin. Spin of Gupte, and Faulkner. Ben Stokes to shoulder more responsibility and Jacques Kallis as the fourth pace option.

Steyn hasn't played a test this year, so I figured I could pick a 2015 debutant in Adam Voges. If not, and I need to go back to the 1880s, I pick Andrew Stoddart.

Joe has kept at some capacity for England. Good enough for me. Not like I'll be bowling teams out.
