Crowe/Hadlee vs Ponting/McGrath

I would have thought that the better duo was clearly (Martin) Crowe and (Richard) Hadlee. The bowling is about equal, Hadlee more proven in an average Test team. Ponting obviously better with the bat than Crowe but adding on Hadlee's runs and next to nothing from McGrath, surely it must be the NZers who win this? Is there some sort of fielding difference which makes up for the runs disparity? What am I missing here?

Ponting is a much better batsman than Crowe.

sum = 64.9
RPI Ponting = 46.6
RPI McGrath = 4.6
sum = 51.2

Ponting RPI - Crowe RPI = 5
Crowe RPI - Hadlee RPI = 18.3
Hadlee RPI - McGrath RPI = 18.7
Ponting is a clearly better batsman than Crowe who's a much better batsman than Hadlee who's a much better batsman than McGrath.
Ponting = 9/10
Crowe = 8/10
Hadlee = 4.5/10
McGrath = 1/10
Ponting + McGrath = 10
Crowe + Hadlee = 12.5
12.5/10 = 1.25
(C + H) RPI/(P + M) RPI = 64.9/51.2 = 1.27
Not exactly rigorous but it seems to do the job!

Ugh, I blame New Zealand Cricket authorities for making Crowe debut so early and not taking care of his knee, After 1985 he averaged 51 in one of the most bowling dominant eras ever and scored heaps of runs everywhere, definitely had Ponting level talent and skill, wasted because of the knee, early debut and weak batting around him.

And that's far from being correct. I'm not from New Zealand or anything, neither crowe is my favourite but bloke had batting ability of as good as anyone. Give him same circumstances as ponting, there's a no reason why he wouldn't have averaged 50+. Some things in life aren't meant to be unfortunately. I'm not saying crowe is better but I don't think there's a big gap once you adjust for variables.

Even though I voted for Crowe Hadlee, I can understand the argument that the batting advantage upfront of Ponting makes up for Hadlees runs.

I think in normal career circumstances in Ponting's era, Crowe would have averaged 50

with Ponting a captain and a an ATG fielder at any position, you would get.

Australia becoming a mid tier team is hardly Ponting's fault though. They had to replace McGrath with Hilfenhause

All the greats of the Golden Australian team of the 90s and 2000s had left Australia by then, all except Ponting. The void created by the leaving of McGrath, Warne, Gilchrist, Hayden etc couldn’t be filled quickly.
Australia also reached a rating of 143 during Ponting’s tenure. No team since that managed to reach that rating. Even 125 today seems a luxury.
Won a BGT in India. They never again managed to do so.
Won against ICC World XI.

The BGT was under Gilly's captaincy.
World XI was a joke test.
The point was to keep them competitive once the greats left but he ended his captaincy with three innings losses at home, unthinkable.
