How prevalent is scouting in the current game at all levels of the sport ? Of course at the highest level countries employ a variety of scouts/advisers around the country in order to get a sense of their capabilities and compatibility and select accordingly. Think the ECB have about six employed to watch county cricket up and down the country.
Counties invariably have a few watching players for all different age groups in order to develop them and get them through the academy and into the 2nd XI then 1st XI. What about after age group/academy ages, do we think (or know) if many counties employ scouts to search for talent at minor county/club level ?
Not asking just about the UK, we know good quality young kids will be watched and offered trials/age group cricket, but say in Australia, with the quality of 1st grade cricket being closer to first-class cricket than club cricket is here in the UK, do Victoria have scouts watching Carlton v Northcote on a Saturday ? I know some of the grade players have been selected for T20 games recently, is that through scout work or just common knowledge ? Presumably solid first grade seasons mean more in Oz than a good club season does over here.
Same for anywhere else, are scouts active at state/franchise/province/club level or is it a dual role conducted by the coach/asst coach ?
Scouting is huge in other sports like football and NFL and of course data analytics are becoming exceptionally important in T20 cricket.Think Parthiv Patel recently landed a scouting role at Mumbai Indians.
