He should end up there. Not yet as of now.
It also depends on how much you weigh each format. I'll do the list for purely tests:
1. Tendulkar
2. Gavaskar
3. Dravid
4. Bumrah
5. Kapil
6. Ashwin
7. Kumble
8. Kohli
9. Jadeja
10. Sehwag
Okay thanks, but can you rank them on the basis of 3 formats?

Cricinfo are also doing a bracket/knockout exercise in the lead up to the WTC Final to determine the greatest Test match of the 21st century.

Which seems a long and convoluted process to end up with Kolkata 2001.

Edgbaston 2005 would like Kolkata to hold his beer.....

Gabba 2021 and Edgbaston 2005 pretty solid contenders

Merchant was probably better than Sehwag imo, but he just didn't have enough of a test career for me to put him above Sehwag in the greatest test cricketers of India list.
And if one is including ODIs then it's Sehwag ofc.

Just do Test+FC for older players (weightage will change depending on era), Test(75)+ODI(25) for players in middle of the spectrum and Test(75)+ODI(15)+T20(10) for more modern players.
Fair enough, don't think Merchant still gets above Sehwag though. Or maybe he does idk. Definitely gets in over Msd though.
