I dont think its such a bad idea.It depends on the quality of the side obviously, but assuming the side is of a high enough quality, it would be worth thinking about.
The thing with NZ cricket is that we have some basic problems running through the game in NZ. One of them is the short season we have. The weather is pretty good after christmas but beforehand its terrible, Lots of early season rain. This could give us the opportunity to send sides over earlier in the season to Aus and play on harder pitches and better weather.
NZ first class teams are scheduled to play 8 four day first class games a year plus the top two play a final. 10 one day games and a semi and final, thats not a lot of cricket. Perhaps this is an opportunity to get a home away from home where NZ cricket could hold a one day tournament in October in Canberra in October to start the season, thus giving more time to play 4 dayers later when the weather is better over here.
Another benefit for NZ cricket is the exposure of our players to different pitches and conditions. We always complain about the pitches in NZ that favour the bowler too much. Yet here we could have Auck v CD on an Aussie pitch. for a decent amount of time.
If an NZA side joins the Pura cup, it would weaken NZ cricket a lot, perhaps an NZ side can enter the Aussie comp and Canberra can join our comp to make up for the players we dont have playing in our comp now..
There was a suggestion before about reducing the amount of NZ teams , if an NZA side got into the Aussie comp, That would be a chance to reduce the NZ teams to 5 to make them stronger, Cutting out the fat, getting rid of the journeymen,. Let in Canberra to make up a 6 team comp.
It could also be a bargaining chip for NZ cricket, If the Aussies want CAnberra in a comp then we could offer that to help us get a side into The Pura cup.
This all depends on the quality of the side though, but I can see how it could benefit NZcricket.
