Two great batsmen who began in the 1950s and played well into the 1960s. Hanif Mohammad carried a fragile Pakistani batting lineup from the age of 17, scoring heavily on matting wickets. His final average of 43 underrates him, as it was dragged down by starting very young and facing a rough deal in his teenage years and early twenties. Colin Cowdrey’s average of 44 also undersells him, since he played past his prime into 1969, when he had developed a clear Achilles heel. Remarkably, he even returned at age 43 to open the batting against Lillee and Thomson in Australia during the 1974–75 series, on lightning-fast pitches.
So overall—who was the better batsman?
