Walcott’s away record isn’t impressive.
in Eng : 3 Tests. Avg of 14.
in Aus : 9 Tests. Avg of 34.

I am not sure if doing well in countries like India and NewZealand in the 1940s and 1950s is a big deal.

He was severely injured in Australia and was dropped 3 games in, this is the kind of context one has to take into account when rating guys from this era of the game, they didn't get many away games and injuries weren't as easily dealt with. In England, he was decent

3 Tests is too low of a sample size.

But it is his record in England that is poor.

1st series :
4 Tests.6 innings
229 runs. Avg of 45.
13. 9. 14. 168*. 8. 17
The one century just boots the average.
6 innings and scored 20+ runs in just one innings.

2nd series.
5 Tests. 10 innings.
247 runs. Avg of 27.
90. 1. 14. 21. 17. 7. 38. 35. 5. 19*

I think Fred hurt him with a delivery in 1957 first inning, ESPN claims that much.

In England in 1957 he started brightly but sustained an injury in the first Test on his way to 90 and never regained his best form. He was, however, back to his imperious best for his final full Test series when Pakistan visited the Caribbean the following year.

Though, the 1950 tour is a bit of a dissapointment barring one knock, he played some excellent innings against Surrey and Yorkshire in the tour games on wet pitches and they had excellent attacks, Surrey had Laker/Bedser brothers and Yorkshire had Trueman/Wardle/Appleyard.

He certainly had the skill, just never got the consistent and good chances away like Worrell, Worrell was excellent in England bar his final few games and yet the other two Ws were universally and unanimously considered greater Batsmen, that means something in my opinion.

here are some good Walcott innings in England against good bowling lineups
