Cairns Vs Flintoff

Jumno

U19 Captain
Both aggressive, attacking batsman.

Both have played brilliant innings.

Cairns a useful bowler and Flintoff himself can make it into the team as a pace bowler. His Ashes 05 exploits is legendary.

Who is better in tests and odis. Who would you pick?

Done this poll before.

Tests:
Cairns was better at both batting and bowling. Cairns was a better test player.

ODIs:
Flintoff was much much much better at bowling. They were about the same with the bat. Flintoff was a much better ODI player.
Flintoff was one of England's 3 or 4 best ever ODI seamers, while Cairns wouldn't be in NZ's top 30.

Imo Flintoff is England's best ODI seamer. Who is he even competing with? Darren Gough??

Tests, Cairns was more than just a "useful bowler". He was a genuine wicket taking opening bowler. His average wickets per innings and strike rate stack up very well against any specialist bowler with a similar average.

Cairns was better over his career in both disciplines, but Flintoffs peak/ceiling was higher.

ODIs, Flintoff is in a different tier both as bowler and batsman. His batting talents were wasted by England. England lacked 6 hitting down the order, so had Flintoff bat down there. He was better than that and should have batted higher.

Largely agree with this - would also like to add that Flintoff not only benefited from higher peaks, but also being English (playing in more high profile series) in terms of being memorable, so he’s perhaps more fondly remembered than his actual quality, and certainly his consistency, suggests .
