Why do average is considered as more important than rpi in test cricket?

Smith need to score 1682 runs in next 26 innings to match Brian Lara's rpi which is next to impossible.

Player A scores 51 and 50, out twice. Player B scores 100 and 1* out once. Is the impact of these two the same? They both scored the same amount of runs per innings in the test.
