BJ Watling retires

Athlai

Not Terrible
I definitely think Watling is probably on the higher end of that figure too. Even with him being a Test specialist I can't see him being paid less than the Ajaz/Sodhi/Young/Neesham/Ravals/Ferguson/Conways/Jamiesons/Blundells of NZ in recent years.

Top guys - Kane Ross Southee Boult
Stalwarts of a few formats - Nicholls Guptill Santa CDG Henry Latham Wagner Watling

Watling probably 6th-11th on the list IMO

I imagine that after last summer KJ rocketed up the list. Would probably be only behind the big 4 and maybe Latham now.

Immenso

International Vice-Captain
The NZC Pay structure is 25% of revenue so will change every contract, but in 2016 it went

1st player (Kane) gets max $205,266 retainer (he also gets an extra $ on top of this for being captain, in 2016 it was $40k
then each player after gets $6k less, so 2nd got $199k, 10th $151k down to 21st getting $85k.

They then get a flat rate of $8,495 per test, NZ$3,682 per one-day international and NZ$2,407 for a Twenty20 international.

So Watling is probably somewhere in the $85-150k retainer and gets $8.5k per Test.
Match fee
2016 93
2017 42.5
2018 59.5
2019 68
2020 42.5

So probably $140k-210k per yearish for Watling at that stage of his career.
Plus he would have got about 17k of match fees for ND in the last season. 7 games each of Plunket Shield and Ford Trophy.

State Captain
On a serious note, he displayed his full range behind the stumps in his last game. The conditions were challenging for a WK and he made it look so bloody easy. Elite level wicket keepers are just great to watch.

GOAT New Zealand test keeper and nobody is close IMO.

It’s funny though, BJ in obviously universally loved, especially on CW. But during his first couple of years of international cricket it was the complete opposite. Twatling was used a lot more than Watling back in those days haha
Honestly can't recall that nor any Watling hate for that matter.

That over where Southee sprayed one waaaay down the legside and then overcorrected the next ball to send one practically to first slip - both of which Watling saved with full length dives was something else.
@Athlai how does that cricket pay structure stack up against what All Black players would make? Is it in the ball park?
It’s not particularly close, the AB’s all earn $500k plus (the top ones over $1M) and that’s before match fees. Of course the NZ players have the advantage of being able to play domestic T20 comps, so the annual income of somebody like Trent Boult is probably similar to the top All Blacks.
