Pretty much balanced. But like others have pointed out, Australia will start as favorites due to Warne and Gilchrist.

Some of the equals here may not be exactly equals but not too far off either.

Justin Langer=Gordon Greenidge
Matthew Hayden=Desmond Haynes
Ricky Ponting=Viv Richards
Mark Waugh=Larry Gomes
Steve Waugh (c)>Gus Logie
Damien Martyn<Clive Lloyd (c)
Adam Gilchrist>>Jeff Dujon (wk)
Shane Warne>>Joel Garner
Brett Lee<Andy Roberts
Jason Gillespie<Michael Holding
Glenn McGrath=Malcolm Marshall

So basically for Aus to beat WI , Warne and Gilchrist have to be at their peak . Because in other departments WI lead Aus .
Have a feeling Warne will struggle to run through WI unless it's a spinning track.

Positive, attacking bats against spin have generally gotten the better of Warne.

WI pacers will also make quick work of Gilly unless it's a flat pitch, in which case they draw.

So aside from a spinning track, Australia will either lose or draw.

Change Logie for Richie Richardson.

Comparing WI 79 to 85 during Lloyd's run and Aus 99 to 2006/7 for Waughs/Pontings runs.

The peak performance for WI is comfortably beating a high quality Aus side in 79/80 in Australia, and then flattening a good Indian side in India in 83. The low points would be a draw in Aus in 81 and a dodgy loss in NZ in 80.

The peak performance for Australia would be beating SA 5-1 home and away in 2001 and 5-0 in 2005, along with a win in India in 2004-5 and SL in 2004. The lows would be losing in SL in 99, India in 2001 and the Ashes 2005, and nearly losing at home to NZ in 2000/1.

Based on the above, WI are just a better quality team. Harder to beat and then destroying a side like Australia in 79/80 with the Chappells, Border, Hughes, Lillee, etc. that was stronger than any side Waugh or Pontings team beat much less beat comfortably.

Greenidge easily better than Langer(in another thread, posters were rating Greenidge>Chanderpaul). In no world, Ponting=Viv, or close. Viv is a tier above. Viv>Ponting. Greenidge>>Langer. Also Roberts>>Lee.

Viv is not a tier above Ponting. Ponting was a great batsman as well and is probably under-rated here. No two equals are exactly equal. You can take it as two of them in the same tier.

Do you agree that Langer+Hayden equals Greenidge+Haynes? Langer-Haynes and Greenidge-Hayden can be taken as the same tier openers.

For me(batsmen)

Bradman

Sachin, Hobbs, Viv, Sobers, Lara, Hutton, Hammond, Smith etc(This is the best after Bradman category)

Gavaskar, Border, Chappel, Ponting

Haynes was great at home, but not so good away.
Agreed, but he was a better home batsmen than Langer, Langer batted in one of the easiest eras for batting, Langer also struggled in big away challenges for Aus: Ind, SL and SA. So I would pick Haynes.

Langer much more likely to survive the new ball than Hayden though.

For me this contest centres around Warne, he is the one massive difference between the two sides. If the pitch allows him to be a factor then WI have nothing to compare. If it doesn't, then the WI attack has too much all round strength.

Is this hypothetical series being played between those two XIs assuming the players were at their peak, or as a snapshot of the specific moments in time from the years in question?

As an example - I think Viv Richards was overall a greater batsman than Ricky Ponting, but Ponting in 2002 was better than Richards in 1983.

Specific moment otherwise I would've just done a fantasy XI.
