During India's historic series victories in West Indies and England in 1971, Venkat was their key bowler. He took 35 wickets across the eight tests, nine more than Bedi. Each of Prasanna and Chandra were omitted for one series. Venkat benefited from the appointment of Wadekar as captain, and for the England tour Adhikari as coach. Adhikari had been one of India's best-ever fielders and insisted on improved fitness and fielding. Venkat was the fittest man in the team and a far superior fielder to the other spinners. He was also a better batsman than them, and better than his numbers suggest, with a sound defensive technique.
Reporting on the West Indies tour Dicky Rutnagur wrote: "Using his height, he [Venkat] got a surprising amount of bounce from even the slower pitches." His report also states that both sides dropped a lot of catches. West Indies were especially fallible in the slips with "even Sobers, on occasions, found wanting". Gavaskar was often dropped early in his innings.
Rutnagur also watched the series in England. "In the field, Wadekar's team were far superior to any previous Indian side in England. Solkar shone in all positions. Close to the wicket, he, Wadekar and Venkataraghavan took their catches expertly. He added: "Engineer's availability for the Test matches made the difference between defeat and victory...His performance behind the stumps was of the highest class."
