May was probably better than stats suggest. Both him and Compton played in some low scoring games although both were massive HTBs as well.

This has been said a few times. But I think May played in much tougher conditions. I think Compton is rated highly for sort of carrying cricket post war.

The actual numbers go down but the gaps are still roughly the same. May - 24.2, Compton - 29.3, Ponting - 31.5, Kallis - 30.3, Sangakkara - 31.2

Of all the batsmen I checked - did a post on this once, May had clearly the lowest, even below Trumper and Hill.

Sehwag was the player I saw with noticeabley the least improvement, averaging 49 whilst others averaged 34.
