This has been said a few times. But I think May played in much tougher conditions. I think Compton is rated highly for sort of carrying cricket post war.

The actual numbers go down but the gaps are still roughly the same. May - 24.2, Compton - 29.3, Ponting - 31.5, Kallis - 30.3, Sangakkara - 31.2

Of all the batsmen I checked - did a post on this once, May had clearly the lowest, even below Trumper and Hill.

Sehwag was the player I saw with noticeabley the least improvement, averaging 49 whilst others averaged 34.

Then you should also substract the runs made by tailenders, which would result into roughly the same thing.

It’s probably not a great way to judge conditions anyways since it’s affected by team strength but it’s better than nothing

Still it shows if a player is any better compared to others in the team or in the opponent team and what king of bowling he had to face.
