If he toured more, I suspect his away record would improve. He missed run spree series' like India 1984-85, Australia 1986-87 & New Zealand 1988.Gooch's away record was so ****ing dreadful. I get he did some amazing things vs Wi but come on. An away average of 36 doesn't lie. Didn't average 40+ away anywhere except India and WI. And his overall record benefits by him playing the majority (63%) of his games at home, unlike other openers we're discussing. He'd probably average sub 40 if he actually toured more.
Morris's record is too dependent on bashing a frankly awful Post Second War England.Arthur Morris and Hanif Mohammed are rated WAY too low on here
Doubtful. 84-85 you could argue (but hey, surely he knew the risks), 86-87 he wasn’t there mentally (dropped out of the tour for personal reasons) and leading up to the NZ tour he of course wasn’t picked, at one point in the 1987 season he was dropped to his county’s second XI on account of how poor his form was.If he toured more, I suspect his away record would improve. I think he didn't tour in 86-87 because his wife was expecting. Was he dropped for the NZ series? He was selected on the subcontinent tour in the same winter, scored some runs and had a good World Cup there. ODI form had a bigger say in Test selection back then.Doubtful. 84-85 you could argue (but hey, surely he knew the risks), 86-87 he wasn’t there mentally (dropped out of the tour for personal reasons) and leading up to the NZ tour he of course wasn’t picked, at one point in the 1987 season he was dropped to his county’s second XI on account of how poor his form was.
Thats my bad, the wording I read tripped me up. Didn’t realise there was both Pak in Eng 1987 and Eng in Pak 87/88I think he didn't tour in 86-87 because his wife was expecting. AgreedKane Williamson making it ahead of Ranji is certainly a choice, a completely wrong one but it's a choice indeed...
Ranji is a bit better than May who is clearly better than Williamson.Agreed
Let's shake on the fact that kane shouldn't make it this earlyRanji is a bit better than May who is clearly better than Williamson.
I'm just trying to imagine this comment in a world where Williamson was English and May a Kiwi. Hmm – I can't.Kane Williamson making it ahead of Peter May is certainly a choice, a completely wrong one but it's a choice indeed...
Mhm Ranjitsinhji, well known Englishman that I'm a big fan of.I'm just trying to imagine this comment in a world where Williamson was English and May a Kiwi. Hmm – I can't.
Say "hot mess" more.No I'm not just talking about a bad series in South Africa, I'm talking about the fact that holistically his away record is a hot mess. I'd be interested to see his FC record away from England, since in tests he played 59% of his matches at home and averaged 22 runs fewer on tour.
Plainly, his away record's a hot mess in the same way that Williamson's is. But it's hardly talked about. Maybe that's because unlike May, Williamson averages 75 at home in his own decade-long peak. Which is rather a lot better than 57.
Well personally I had no idea it was nearly as bad. Like Compton's away record on steroids. But it doesn't matter, does it? Away record only matters for non-Englishmen.Are we using the same forum? because May went 10-9 with Sehwag on this one largely because of his away record, lol. Williamson at the very least gets the respect to crush guys like Sehwag and Hayden fairly easily.
