there does seem to be a real reluctance to pick spinners:

Hollies
Tattersall
Panesar
Jack White
Moeen Ali
Geoff Miller
Edmonds
Tufnell
Emburey
Cook
Giles
Croft
Pocock

all had reasonable careers (not world beaters obviously), but unpicked.

my Eng P XI
Tavare
Watson
Ballance
Ramprakash
Crawley
Buttler
Ali
Bresnan
Malcolm
Mullally
Hollies

Another fun game. Incredible how many quality players there are leftover. Have to think that Warner & Attewell were unlucky, Jack White too.

Yardley for skip.

Yet Dean Headley made it comfortably. Is there something I missed with him? As Nufan would say, I never got the memo that he was any good.

Actually I like Headley. Very talented but career curtailed by injuries and got the impression the selectors didn't rate him as they should have.

Not sure how unlucky some are, White and Hollies certainly but Pocock and Giles averaged over 40, which ain't very good. Also not sure about Malcolm and Mullally.

Yet Dean Headley made it comfortably. Is there something I missed with him? As Nufan would say, I never got the memo that he was any good.
Better average than Harmison, Hoggard, Finn, DeFreitas etc. Better bowler too.

There's a few good pace bowlers who missed had curtailed careers and missed out. Larter and Rumsey would both walk into the current team. Arthur Fielder was perhaps a bit too far back in time for most. Les Jackson only played twice yet was better than a great many who are listed, not least due to the two pace + Bailey strategy that persisted through the fifties and England's selection strategy that valued being from the right counties, which Derbyshire wasn't, and class and appearance more than skill. Should probably have gone to Australia in 50/51 when England were still desperate for some genuine pace.

And we are done. Starfighter has already added the captaincy above, I feel I have to do it anyway.

Were there any teams that you feel are actually better than the teams ahead of them?

No-one else was going to get enough votes so I decided to call it early.

Would be an easier question to answer if I knew or remembered anything about batsmen.

I'd rank F above E.

Surprised that David Steele wasn't picked - obviously he didn't have a long career, but didn't do a lot wrong in the two tough series he did play in.
