Who is better player of high quality fast bowling
As it seems, De Villiers probably didn't like wobblers. I reckon if he played 3/4 more matches against Asif/Broad, he could end up with a sub 50 average.Broad destroyed De Villiers heh
Great against swing and pace bowlers, poor against seam/wobble seam bowlers is what I'm getting here mostly. He retired at the perfect time then, in the wobble ball era from 2018 onwards he definitely ends up with a sub 50 avg.Found these from Cricmetric:-

Averaging 80 against high pace doesn't sound realistic at all, as that'd probably require him to average low 40's against other kinds of deliveries. That 80 average could be from some fixed period in his career. Not a great record vs Bumrah, Rabada or Wood. The 80+ avg stat against high pace looking sus now
I think that stat surfaced back in 2019 when he was duelling with Archer.Averaging 80 against high pace doesn't sound realistic at all, as that'd probably require him to average low 40's against other kinds of deliveries. That 80 average could be from some fixed period in his career.

I mean, I wouldn't expect him to score all of his runs in a match against one bowler. And RPM is this scenario also depends on how much the bowler was used. The batter averages higher H2H means the bowler couldn't take his wicket and thus failed. These feel like useless and misleading.
Like the vs Anderson one. Average of 70 but in reality he’s scoring 15 runs a match against him. Not an innings, a match.
Again its missing context though, how much was the batsman facing that bowler? If he scored 15 runs off Anderson and faced 42 balls from him is that Anderson failing?I mean, I wouldn't expect him to score all of his runs in a match against one bowler. And RPM is this scenario also depends on how much the bowler was used. The batter averages higher H@H means the bowler couldn't take his wicket and thus failed.
True, one should look into overall stats involving the players because that's the only number that actually matters to the game itself.Yeah these stats can be interesting from a high level view (e.g. seeing if there's a common MO among the bowlers each player struggled most with). But you can't read much into each individual head to head.
As well as the lol sample sizes these raw stats don't tell you anything about the context of when/where they faced off. E.g. with Smith - did he play against these bowlers when he was picked as a youngling leg spinner or in his batting prime? Was he playing at home in the mid 2010s on some of the roadiest roads to ever road, or did he face them in the last 5 years in largely bowling-friendly conditions?
