AB retires from all forms of Cricket

International Regular
Should have done more at international level. The early abandonment of the proteas will always be a black mark.

He ruined ODIs for me. Watching him around 2014-16, I knew I would ever enjoy watching an ODI this much again. Better bats than him were clearly possible in the future, especially cos of how the game was evolving, but I knew I would never see that kind of entertainment by the standards of the time again, and stopped caring about ODIs much after he was gone.

It is hard to think of a higher form of praise than this. I am not some kind of Indian Sachin fanboy who built my love of the game around him (ignore the fact that I am a huge Sachin fanboy). I loved ODIs from the first time I saw the in 1992. But I kinda stopped caring when AB was out.

This thread really should be named a tribute thread, as is customary when a great player retires, but thats ok, i will treat it as such. Not cos he deserves it on 'retirement' from 'all' cricket, but cos he deserves it.

In tests, at least when I really care about the result, I am totally partisan.

That 2nd test in 2019 (with the series on the line) was the one time I abandoned the partisanship, and just said, screw it, I am just gonna enjoy the quality of the bowling. I have watched (at least a fair bit of) every RSA AUS series in the last 30 years, and hated it every time the AUS bowling ripped into RSA. That was the only time I ever stopped and genuinely enjoyed the quality of the bowling, without caring if it wrecked RSA, cos it was just too good. The reverse that everyone was getting was just too good to watch. 4 man hooping assualt that left RSA clueless. I watched stuff like peak Mitch, Steyn, Ambrose, Waqar etc., but I havent seen a sustained assualt like that. It sure AF took some good bowling for me to comment on CW that I was enjoying watching AUS shred RSA.

When AB was facing, he made them look lile club bowlers. Best innings I have ever seen. Best (collective) pace I have ever seen, and they were trying to feed him singles. At one stage, batting with QdK, who at that that stage was easily one of the best bats in the world in RSA conditions and strike farming. Ridiculous.

He isnt the best test bat I have seen (and I havent seen most of the greats), but he is the one with the highest ceiling.

Most talented player I have watched

And you can’t knock a guy who plays 100tests for his country (in this same way it’s highly reductive to call Chris Gayle a t20 specialist)

but there is a gnawing feeling that with his talent he could have been in the Sachin / Lara league if not better. And he didn’t achieve that
