5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

I don't think Carse will do well at all tbh. The archetype of the bowler who touring teams think will do in Aus but rarely does (because they bowl too short). They'd be better off picking a good, skiddy swing-and-seam bowler, those kinds of bowlers have done well in Aus of late.
Well yeah if you have tracks like in BGT even Woakes would be very good there. But assuming they revert back to bouncy roads, that attack should do well.

Don't think anyone had Siraj completely eclipsing Bumrah on their cards when this series started. Surely one of the great feats of fast bowling endurance in recent times. Must've bowled close to 200 overs on unforgiving surfaces.
185 overs which is similar to Woakes but Woakes bowled at a much lower pace than him.

I'm working on the assumption that they won't; we've been waiting for them to return to their historic norms for a while now and they've only gotten spicier. We aren't really entering a nationwide drought again either which also tends to coincide with flat decks.

Worth noting that spinners had even less impact on the BGT as they did here. No point picking one for the pink ball Test, and if they do want one for the others, should go with one who can bat.

We’ve had so many great moments under Baz, but for the most part, that’s all they’ve been, moments. That first away series in Pakistan is the one series we managed to be ruthless and stay consistent over the course of the whole series
its the story of post wwii english cricket, moments.

best test team in the world in 2011, for about six months.
2005 ashes team which fell to pieces shortly after
(the white ball era was good i will say, a marvel captain who had a freakish collection of batters)

despite the infrastructure and strong bottom line, they are predominantly also rans.

My gut feel is that Carse will do well in the Ashes while Atkinson will be the best English bowler. Carse is a better bowler when he has a better bowler than him along with him.

Your question has been answered
A more interesting question is if Woakes had to face a ball, what would India have bowled at him? Fending one off his body would have been nigh on impossible, but a bit heartless I guess. Probably just aim a full ball/yorker at the stumps and see if he can keep it out.

A lot of people here have been clamouring for us to return to preparing green seamers, putting aside whether that’s possible with how our weather has been (no surprise that the greenest pitch of the summer was at the Oval when we’d had a bit of rain), I think this Test has shown that doing that wouldn’t necessarily benefit us, it brings the other team’s seamers into the game as much as our own, and our batters are much more vulnerable when the ball does things. I look forward to seeing our bowlers on what promise to be spicy Australian wickets, but our batters up against Cummins, Hazlewood and Starc? No comment!

for what its worth and he does have a super cricket brain, ponting said on sky he'd without question pick bashir in australia.
He did explain his reasoning, and in theory it does work, but you wonder if he was being cheeky and putting his Australian cap on, Lyon was recently claiming Leach is the best spinner in England and we’ve seen how he’s done Down Under!

What a win for India. They really deserved it for their fight, after things started so, so dire from the first few days.

Edit: Also England should have demanded a draw. This joke is never dieing, lol.

Wasn't the BGT breaking records for engagement and viewer numbers in India too? Regardless of how it might look elsewhere in the world the format seems to have never been more popular in India.
Yeah test cricket is so unique coz it gives you 5 days of live sports programming, you can fall in and out of it and follow scores on line. Watch it for certain passages but when it comes to the finale like it did almost every test this series, there is honestly nothing like it and it becomes a bit of a national/international moment.

Even the whiteball formats need to wait 2 or 4 years to do that.

I think his alliance to Australia matters not a jot in this instance. Dawson, Bashir, Rehan. Pick who you want, none of them will make a jot of difference with the ball.

nah come on now, Strauss (and later Cook)'s England were so much more than that. I have them as the 4th best test side I have seen, behind the 00s Aussies, Smith's RSA and Kohli's India. And they are bloody close to 3rd even in that list.
