2008 U-19 World Cup NZ/India Semi

Been watching a bit of footage of the NZ vs India semi.

Nick Beard looks to get amazing flight and drift - and just love the guys action. Looks old school.

India came so close to shelling this game. Boult gets tight to the stumps when he bowls huh.

NZ's most successful cup to date right? How will the next team perform?

Random thread.... where did you obtain this footage?

Funnily enough I actually watched some of this game too. I distinctly remember the Indians couldn't hit Southee off the square. He was bowling a shorter length than he does now and his pace and bounce were quite intimidating by U-19 standards. Boult was pretty hittable by comparison.

Our best ever U-19 performance was in 1997-98 when we made the final, btw

I'd actually started watching the India vs Pakistan final from a couple of years earlier. India skittled Pakistan for a 100 or so. Pakistan went ballistic and had the Indians 9/6 or something rediculous.

What has become of those Pakistani bowlers? They were swinging the ball all over the place.

Did a search on Youtube for the footage.

Do you think NZ will have to wait another 10 years for a strong U19 side?

Know much about Nick Beard? He was getting the smack a bit but loved his action and flight.

JimmyGS rates Nick Beard I think.

iirc didn't one of the gun Pakistani bowlers from 05/06 chuck it?

I think the chucker I'm thinking of is Riaz Afridi from the 2003/04 World Cup. The 2005/06 World Cup was the one with the low-scoring final. NZ had a pretty average team tbh....Guptill was in it and 17 year old Southee, plus gun Roneel Hira

Jimmy to win it for us next year imo. :p

I remember that game, good game. Our batting struggled to find the gaps off memory. Beard had a few issues gripping the ball in the wet. Remember groaning when he kept on being picked to bowl, at the time he wasn't much chop with a wet ball (most spinners struggle), he'll learn though, and seems to have some promise.

Sneaky fella.

So how do you think the next U19 squad is shaping up for the next world cup compared to the last one?

One of the strongest batting lineups I've ever seen. Bowling isn't great though. We don't have any spinner atm either.

Played a 3 dayer and a 1 dayer vs Wellington A. Would'v won the 3 dayer comfortably but for rain, and smashed them in the 1 dayer. Would've beaten ND A in a 3 dayer but for rain. Won 1 and Lost 1 out of 2 one dayers vs Auckland A.

But without Corey Anderson, Kane Williamson, Harry Boam and Doug Bracewell who were busy with 1st class games.

Nah, that was our tour for this year. :(

WC is in 2010, so into preparing for that now pretty much.
Plenty of time for it. Where is it this time? Malaysia probably didn't suit you guys much last time round, still did awesomely though.

They're going for the hattrick of non NZ-suiting countries. Sri Lanka, then Malaysia. It's Kenya this time. Yay.
