I suspect he's been the biggest victim of the entire circus surrounding Rohit, Kohli etc - it really seems to have taken a long time for him to get a consistent role in the team and my feeling is that he struggles more when his role is less clearly defined and he feels less secure about what he's there to do; that's probably part of why he looks so much more comfortable as an opener where he can just set his own tempo and rhythm and not really worry about match state as much.
