And suppose the Ashes doesnt come, what would you do about it? :D

Start a petition probably.. get people to complain to sky t.v. like people did when they wern't televising the NZ tests in the West Indies.. after huge public demand they ended up showing the second test

So things can be done

That is excellent.

We dont have to worry about getting cricket games but I would want more NBA, Tennis.

They wouldnt start more of it based on a petition of basketball fans I feel tho.

I think there are going to be televised - not sure if on SS1 or only on digital but I remember Ian Smith saying something about it during the Sri Lanka series.

I also heard they will be televised in some shape or form. The head of Sky TV was interviewed a week or so ago on Radio Sport, and he said there will be some coverage.

I can't remember how much.

When is the ashes anyway?
I don't think it will get a huge viewing audience though, its gonna be right in the hot part of the rugby season.

Why won't it have a big audience? Rugby is a one day game, while a cricket Test is over 5 days. Although it might clash with some of the Lions midweek games....

Because most people are into rugby during winter not cricket. I lose interest in cricket during winter but when summer comes. Straight back into it. Plus new zealand arn't playing, and sky tv are obsessed with saving money.

And if it was live, why would it clash? All Lions games kick off at 7.10pm, meaning the games will be over by 9pm. An hour or so later, and it will be time for live Ashes cricket (if they do screen the games live). I can't think of anything better.

Exactly.. saying it will clash is no excuse.

It is arguably the biggest sporting event of the year the ashes and so IMO sky are obligated to show it

I would be very surprised if Sky TV cover the series. We'll probably get an hours highlights package at the end of a each day if we're lucky.

Why would Sky spend the $$$$ on televising a series that doesn't invovle New Zealand anyway? Doesn't make much business sense if you ask me.

Yea i see where you are coming from but at least it is a sport that NZ compete in and its our summer game unlike golf and tennis which get considerable coverage on sky along with numerous other sports that NZ has no or little afiliation with

And if Sky wants to keep expanding itself and continue to get better and more coverage of events then you think the ashes would be something worth buying into

Well, the ex-pat audience is one reason. In Australia, Foxtel shows all Australian matches, plus games for New Zealand, England and South Africa. In recent times we've seen the West Indies and England tours of South Africa, the New Zealand and West Indies tours of England, the South African and Sri Lanka tours of New Zealand, and the South African tour of India. I believe they try and show a cross-section of cricket from around the world, with preference to those countries with a fair sized ex-pat audience in Australia like New Zealand and England. I could see the Ashes being shown in New Zealand based on this logic.

As far as the audience goes, well everyone here will be watching it, right? ;)

Not for the last couple of hours - off home now anyway.

Phew, I was worried that the work IT department had blocked it.

I think the Lions will be out of the way by the Ashes, they don't start till late July.

Good news. I sent an email to sky asking them if they were showing coverage of the ashes and this was their reply -

Thank you for your email.

We are pleased to advise that we have secured live rights, however it will depend on what over sporting commitments we have as to whether we will be able to show all the sessions live.

yeah i heard the interview on the cricket club on radio sport. it is great that we will be getting coverage of this ashes series as i am already feeling rather cricket deprived. also on the interview, the guy said that since they were upgrading their satellites that they were considering a cricket channel much liket he rugby channel, and they were looking at february 2006 for the channel to go live.

sorry if the last bit doesn't make much sense, i'm a bit drugged up with an inner ear infection and bronchitis :(
