Sunday 13th March
CW Black v CW Green
at the CWBCC Stadium
In their crucial match at the CWBCC Stadium, the teams CW Green and CW Black showed just how close they really are, as the home side squeezed home by a deceiving margin of 4 wickets. It took a scintillating captain's knock from Andrew Garven to lift Green from despair at 31/4 to their victory target of 149.
Garven was out with just 5 runs needed, but he had already done sufficient damage, receiving notable support from young Nicholas Rose batting down the order. Black batted first in perfect batting conditions, yet struggled against Bryce Cunningham, on fire. The pacer ripped through the Black lineup to take 6 wickets and inspire a score of 116 all out.
Yet the game was far from over. Indeed, the Black bowlers got their team back into the game in a flash. Chris Broadbent and Callum Thompson shared 6 wickets in the innings and Green was struggling at 85/5 at one point. However, the determination of Anthony Lezama came up short of a second FC hundred, but helped resurrect the innings. Also making positive contributions were Rose and Weber in 249 all out.
Trailing by 133 runs, the Blacks were cautious the second time around. Loc and Kearsley got good starts but did not carry on, and it was 123/2 when the latter departed. Simon Jones stuck about though. With much to live up to, even at this late stage of the season, Jones buckled down for a 256-ball innings, showing true grit and determination. He and Blackman looked like turning the game the way of Black when an uncanny move by Garven paid off.
Rather than take the new ball straight away, Garven gave himself a second over against the set Jones. To his utmost delight, he dismissed him caught at midon, then saw Weber get Blackman in the following over. Dubb-Lynch and Hing made useful contributions from there in, but Black could only manage 281. The lead of 148 was an admirable effort, but not enough.

CW Blue v CW Red
at the CW Oval
Cricket Web Blue made a huge stride in its race to avoid a last place finish with a big win over Red at the Oval. The game was closely matched for the most part, but one man separated the two teams in the end. Having been dropped for several games, Wilshere made his way back into the FC team and definitely held his opportunity. The rookie scored two unbeaten half-centuries, denied a hundred in the second innings by Liam Camps' declaration.
Cloete scored 94 in the Blue first innings, but it was Wilshere's knock that held the team together down the stretch, as the Red seamers bowled well enough to keep the batsmen in constant trouble. Blue settled for 264 all out and took to the field.
The Reds began well with a partnership of 60, before Liam Camps dismissed Ghansar for the initial breakthrough. Ian Markus flattered to deceive with some comfortable strokeplay, but was LBW to a great delivery from Fuller. Rob Dauth's middle order half-century held the innings together, but he met the most support down the stretch from Dave Watt and Nick Borcich, the only batsmen to reach double figures after him.
All the Blue bowlers contributed, and Red was limited to 251 all out. A slim lead in their pocket, Blue was cautious the second time around. Camps and Fitzsimmons saw off the new ball, but did little else. Cloete looked tremendous in his stay at the crease, but was caught close in against a Bennett googly.
Once again the pressure fell on Wilshere. Watt was working up good pace and continuing his good form by keeping the batsmen jumping, but the Blues soldiered on. Jellett, Fuller and Popat played very important innings down the lineup (especially Popat, who added 89 with Wilshere). Straddling the thin line between positive play and caution once more, Camps called the innings closed with a lead of 343 and 77 overs left on a worn pitch.
The equation proved more than sufficient for Blue, and Whelan and Maddocks were the only Red batsmen to advance their scores past 20. Once again the Blue seamers shared the wickets around nicely of 160 all out.
