Should cricket strive to 'grow' as a sport...

That did actually happen. But due to corruption and mismanagement the money that was pumped into Kenyan cricket didn't go to where it was supposed to and Kenya suffered a major decline.

Those Rebels squads were mightily impressive. Obviously, we can't know just how they would have gone had they played actual tests, but you'd have to think they would have been stiff competition for anybody.

Also, if you read that interview, he says that rather than give him a contract when he's just playing T20s they should use that money to invest in a younger player who's going to be available in all three formats. That's a much more reasonable take on matters than the headline would suggest.

I seem to remember him picking up an injury not too long after he came onto the scene and never being quite the same after that.

It's not so much about that, but rather that they wouldn't have as much control over him. In rugby, SARU has a say in how the locally-based Springboks are managed, and there may be something similar for cricket. But even though I think it's possible, I'm not leaning into that too heavily as to...

I wonder if that county contract complicated things for Bedingham. He's based in the UK, so they would kind of have to grant him a permanent NOC to allow him to ply his trade there. CSA are usually pretty amenable when it comes to NOCs, but they are based on things like fitness, and that would...

    *Official* Emerging Nations Cricket Thread

This was the squad announcement, which uses the names that the teams were eventually given after international status was removed from the matches. https://cricket.co.za/2024/02/21/sa-emerging-and-ussa-stars-to-feature-for-team-sa-at-the-13th-african-games/ And from the Cricinfo article: So...

It doesn't appear to be a case of stripping the games of international status but rather that they should never have had international status in the first place. From your link (which is also on Cricinfo here): South Africa had declared even before the tournament started that the men's team was...

The team names on Cricinfo have been changed, so it appears that international status has already been removed. CSA were referring to the sides as University Sports and SA Emerging before the tournament started, so it seems as though they never intended for the matches to be internationals.

Cricinfo are now calling the teams "University Sport South Africa" and "South Africa Emerging Women". So it looks like they never intended for the matches to be internationals but clearly that information took a while to get to record keepers like Cricinfo.

My understanding is that CSA never intended these matches to be full internationals, otherwise they wouldn't have sent the side they did. It could pose some problems though as it's entirely conceivable that something like Cricinfo's database isn't set up to accommodate a tournament where some...

Namibia and Zimbabwe also seem to be missing their big names. So this could have been a deliberate decision to level the playing field a bit. CSA were referring to the teams they sent as SA Emerging, which suggests that they didn't consider the matches to be full internationals, but it seems...

They didn't. Only a handful of players have played internationals before and they're regulars. CSA are calling the team "SA Emerging", which as I understand it means they don't consider these matches full internationals. But everyone else seems to be, so I don't know what that does to players'...

I could understand Conrad's responses if he was specifically asked whether Verreynne or Rickelton would keep, but that doesn't appear to be what's happening. What comes across is a preference Stubbs to Rickelton, and while there's nothing wrong with Stubbs, Rickelton surely has the better...

There's this list, although I didn't spot any father-son combos. It's only scores above 350 though, so there'll be a lot not on it. https://www.espncricinfo.com/records/most-runs-in-an-innings-94177

Hermann and Pillay must be kicking themselves. Out for 2 and 0 respectively, and the next two guys have gone really big.

That was a trend I noticed a while ago, and I do wonder if young batsmen are being encouraged to give the gloves a go so that they've got another string to their bow to potentially aid their selection. They don't necessarily have to be a full-time keeper, but being able to keep in an emergency...

I remain a fan of Mulder, but he's starting to reach the point where you wonder if he's one of those players who just can't make the step up to international level. So it's becoming a question of how long to continue backing him, hoping that he'll come right.

    South Africa team selection

The problem with Mulder is that his bowling's been fine but he hasn't done enough with the bat to justify being selected primarily for that. I know it's just been two matches, but on the current evidence De Swardt seems a better fit for the role of a batsman who can also chip in with the ball.
