Better Batsman : Jadeja vs Imran

Do you understand what "disproportionately" means? This is a valid point I did not consider. But I think "length of longest innings (plural)" is a better barometer than "number of 100s", and I'd chuck in FC record for good measure. (That was genuinely not a ploy to say "haha Jadeja has 3 FC...

5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

It's kinda awesome that he still has one of the best 2nd innings Knocks ever, and that too in India.

    Like for like injury replacements

They already have to name 1 batsman, 1 fast bowler, 1 spin bowler, 1 allrounder and 1 wicket-keeper as the concussion/covid subs before each game. My guess is they will use the same list if injury subs were allowed.

    Like for like injury replacements

I would broadly agree with this. Only thing I'd mention is that if Inglis was in the starting 11 and Webster the sub, he could only be a replacement for him if he didn't bowl. During Eng v Ind we've seen a bloke with a broken foot (who was basically walking around in a protective boot and...

    Like for like injury replacements

IMO there should be injury replacements in Tests. A bowler going down early in the first innings is a big disadvantage for any team for something that can be completely out of any teams control. I'd potentially only offer injury replacements for different halves of a game. E.G. if a player goes...

Better Batsman : Jadeja vs Imran

I would argue reaching three figures is definitely 3 times as impactful as single figures

    Sid Barnes vs Lindsay Hassett

Just don't know how you keep coming with these, great effort. Look at Hassett's record against the 2 great leg spinners, Tiger and Grum. Yet he struggled against Doug Wright, whom Hassett considered a terrific bowler. I think Wright got him 12 times in tests and was perhaps the main reason why...

Better Batsman : Jadeja vs Imran

We can debate that since it really depends on the team you are in but it still shows an ability to stick at the crease which is the mark of a better bat.

Better Batsman : Jadeja vs Imran

A persisting myth, but tons have disproportionately smaller impact than fifties because they're more likely to be scored in dead games. In other words, 50 & 50 = 100 & 0. It's not complicated: reaching three figures doesn't make an innings three times as impactful.

Better Batsman : Jadeja vs Imran

Sorry but crossing 50 isn't to me the mark of a better bat if your RPI is the same. Doesn't make sense. Tons yes because those innings have disproportionately bigger impact and show a capacity for lasting the distance.

    Sid Barnes vs Lindsay Hassett

Man I sure like it when my rating players very highly solely based on FC averages is validated like this. Bowes and now Hassett. Better than Larwood and McCabe respectively.

Better Batsman : Jadeja vs Imran

Kapil crossed 50 ever 5.2 innings IK crossed 50 ever 5.2 innings Jadeja crosses 50 every 3.8 innings. I don't see how Kapil was better than IK. Limited bat or not, IK was able to cross 50 at same frequency as Dev. Dev does not have an advanatge in RPI as well or in avg. Yes Jadeja obviously...

...Verity, Alan Davidson or Fred Trueman was bowling for the opponent team (number of times he was dismissed by those bowlers in brackets): 131 innings; 6234 runs @ 53.74 vs Bill O'Reilly: 16 innings; 942 runs @ 58.88; 6 50's, 3 100's (4 times) Hassett was famous for his ability to take on...

What we learned from the 5th Test

These are all reasonable and well thought out points on why we should be reticent on allowing subs. However, it gives an opportunity for an additional ad break, so it WILL happen, whether we like it or not.

    English Domestic Season 2025

Middlesex always looked a bit short after the dip in the middle-late stage of their innings. I always thought they Somerset had the chase in hand but the Rew brothers did indeed do well to settle it. Rew Jr started a little slowly but a chat with his brother seemed to prompt him to play more...
