    Absurdly Awesome Cricket Stats

Russell's instance was remarkable in that SA only had 7 innings in the series (and in one of those SA didn't lose a wicket).

Would Botham make it to your England ATG XI?

All the double-o's in the top 4 made me wonder about who'd be in the all-time England OO-team: Cook, Gooch, Woolley, Root, Brook, Collingwood, Spooner+, Larwood, Lockwood, Wood, Underwood.

Determining player of the match/series for historic tests

Lowest scoring (completed) Test if you're measuring it by runs per wicket. Aus v SA at Melbourne 1931-2 has the lowest total runs scored (SA 36 & 45, Aus 153).

Two of those matches started on 16 Feb 1973. There are more instances, e.g. AUS vs IND Cricket Scorecard, 1st Test at Sydney, January 02 - 04, 1981

In the 'Ramadhin and Valentine' Test at Lord's in 1950, WI apparently bowled 26 overs an hour (figures from Charles Davis's database).

That is, although India came very close back in 1962 : the innings where Gibbs had the remarkable figures of 53.3-37-38-8. He took 8 for 6 in his final spell of about 16 overs. This NZ 2nd innings , though much lower, is also worth a look (though probably wasn't much fun to watch).

Similarly, Mickey Stewart held 77 catches at short leg/silly mid-on in 1957, second only to Hammond's 78 in 1928.

Also, Hammond scored two hundreds in the match in which he held 10 catches (Glos v Surrey in 1928). Apparently no wicket-keeper has done this, though WR James was close (99 in each innings and 13 dismissals).

Also noticeable that in the first innings Barnes bowled his 32 overs unchanged.

Unless it was changed especially for this match, it would have been 6-ball overs (the only 8-ball over season in England was 1939).

Grace played for 11 years longer than Woolley; on the other hand, Woolley played over 100 more matches. Frank Tarrant (12) is the 5th other player. Hirst and Rhodes apparently managed the feat 8 times each (or 9 times for Hirst if you count his "2 centuries, 2 5'fers" match as double).

Hours of play over the last 200 years?

Charles Davis's Test match ball-by-ball cards (here) give the hours of play where known.

Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

He apparently first played for Argentina in the 1994 ICC Trophy (see Wiki page of squads).

Reid's 100 out of 159 also seems pretty remarkable. He also scored 74 (out of 266) in the first innings; no other batsman reached 50 in the match, but the England batters made a lot of 30s and 40s and won by 7 wickets.
