They knew play would not restart before 15.00 so gave the groundstaff time to get to work and and the ground some drying time. It rained rather a lot a couple of Sundays back.

Umpired Pope a couple of times in Club cricket and he's not stood out. But what do I know. I suspect that Scurran will not only play Test cricket but rather a lot of it. #kissofdeath Scurran 3 wickets in 7 balls - 10 in a match. Fifth youngest on history to take 100 wickets for Surrey...

Amar is working on his batting (he was a good batsman when he was 14) and his fitness/mobility. Hopefully Surrey have a good fitness/conditioning person on hand.

When he was 14 he looked 14 - impressive as a player and as a young man then an well. Met him last year and the beard has certainly aged him. He had some serious issues with his action in his mid teens but the coaches appear to have sorted that out.

Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

Actually the view of the British media was that, whilst in was perfectly within the Laws and regulations it was not really the done thing. There were immediate suggestions from within English cricketing circles that it shouldn't happen.

Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

Burge fined him after the game at The Oval - for 'dissent' (a barely perceptible eyebrow raise).

Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

"Foreign substances " weren't mentioned in the Laws at the time and as you said Burge couldn't even ind evidence that he'd put dirt on the ball, neither could the umpires................

Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

At that time there was nothing in the Laws or regs about it. Hence Burge having no power to impose a fine after that game .

Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

Dirt gets on the ball all the time, and players get dirt on their fingers all the time. Still a fact that Burge found nothing untoward and had to create a feeble reason to fine Atherton after the next game.

Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

Michael Atherton, 1994 In the "dirt in pocket" affair, then England captain Michael Atherton was accused of ball tampering during a Test match with South Africa at Lord's in 1994 after television cameras caught Atherton reaching into his pocket and then rubbing a substance on the ball. Atherton...

Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

Agreed. Had they done this it would have been a story but not a huge one. To borrow a line from Lord Melchett in Blackadder 2 thet twisted and turned like a giant twisty turny thing. In trying to deny the bleeding obvious they looked stupid.
